In Dublin, the enforced closure of bars and pubs due to Covid-19 was quickly followed by many bars' (and cafes') decision to board up their windows, giving the landscape a suddenly apocalyptic feel. The bars are as much of a tourist attraction as anything else in this city, and to see them fall silent, barricaded away indefinitely is surreal: there's something distinctly more unsettling about the seeming permanence of boarded up doors and windows than simple blinds and locks.
